A brash, young Steven Spielberg, riding high on the success of Jaws, was approached by producers to direct a sequel. He refused and, according to Joseph McBride’s biographyÂ Steven Spielberg,Â stated that theÂ entire concept of sequels a “cheap carny trick.”
Jaws 2 is the perfect example of what we understand sequels to be today. The environment is meant to echo what made its predecessor so successful– just budgeted and marketed as bigger and louder.
