And it’s been almost as long since his 18-year-old daughter Destiny has opened up about her dad’s drug addiction and recovery.
Speaking with People/Entertainment Weekly for their feature, Surviving A Father’s Addiction: Lamar Odom’s Family Speaks Out, the teen confessed she didn’t think the former NBA star was going to make it:
“It was a school night when I found out. We all thought that he was, that this was it for him and he was going to pass away. But, life is so crazy.”
Her first visit with Lamar in the hospital lasted 30 minutes, and she believes it had so much to do with his waking up from his coma:
“The next morning he was ripping tubes out of his mouth and I don’t really think that’s a coincidence. I don’t really think that’s a coincidence. I think he was meant to be here because of me and my brother. It sounds like a cheesy movie, but I think that everything happens for a reason.”
Destiny, along with her younger brother Lamar Jr., held an intervention following his hospitalization:
“With close family friends. I basically gave him the ultimatum that it was rehab or me not speaking to him anymore. I think that hit him really hard.”
As you may remember, their dad “successfully” completed a stint in rehab this past January!
Khloé Kardashian‘s former stepdaughter added she’s since seen a change in the star:
“When your parent is an addict and they get clean it’s like a whole new world. A whole new person, really. It’s crazy what therapy and rehab can do to a person. He’s just a lot more clear and in the moment and he’s more apologetic. He’s able to see more the pain that he’s caused when he’s clean.”
It’s so brave of her to open up about such a difficult time in her family’s lives. You can watch her interview, along with hearing her mom Liza Morales‘ insight HERE.
We continue to wish Lamar the best with his recovery.
